I Will Not Be Bought:

Those darn kids. They never listen, yet teenagers are considered the most valuable demographic to advertisers, spending over $200 billion per year on snack food, clothing and entertainment. With discretionary income to buy all things rad, today’s teen consumer is a prime target for brands. In fact, one loyal, lifelong consumer is valued as high as $100,000 for a single retailer. They are listening to someone. Let it be us!

The Live Show:

I Will Not Be Bought is an interactive, music- based performance focusing on the influence of advertising on body image, nutrition, substance abuse and peer pressure that tours through middle and high schools nationwide. With her band Sunset West, Jill has sold over 10,000 CDs of her original music, appeared on national television and toured with many contemporary artists teens know and love. Using these credentials and lots of hairspray, Sunset West can explain the intentions and tools of advertising through a medium teens readily connect with and respond to: rock music. The first half of the show is performed as an interactive slide show and lecture. The remaining time is for rocking out to a live music performance from Sunset West, a hula hoop contest and a candid question-and- answer period. As an addendum to the usual school day routine, Jill serves as an educated, relevant source for reading between the lines of teen-targeted advertising to help teens make healthier and more informed choices.

Funding:

Schools can pay for the show privately through PTA funds for assemblies or fundraisers. Discounts are available when schools join forces and book Jill in the same area at the same time.

With the rage of childhood obesity, many grant and funding opportunities are available.
--Local and state health departments have funding earmarked for wellness. Specifically, health departments have a pool of funds called “tobacco free” money from cigarette company settlements. Call your county health department and speak to their wellness coordinator to inquire about the availability of these funds.
--Contact your state or local “Council for the Arts.” Many of the councils have grants for teachers to bring in artists like Jill. Contact your county educational services board that regulates your teaching standards and curriculum. In New York, for example, the BOCES (Board of County Educational Services) provides funding in full for Jump with Jill! Ask specifically for the “arts in education coser.”
--Reach out to healthy companies in your area that might be interested in sponsoring or co-sponsoring the show in your school. The company will be featured in all of our media materials and in the show in your area―providing a unique advertising opportunity for them and a free show for you. Connect them with us and we can work out the finer details. Other companies, like Walmart, offer grants for wellness programming.
--Search around for grants. For example, The Experimental Television Center offers a rolling grant to non-profits for Presentation Funds

Show length:
